A sarcoma is a tumor that affects connective tissue. Soft tissue sarcomas include fat, muscle, blood vessels, deep skin tissues, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments.
Sarcomas are typically found in the upper arm, pelvis and thigh bone. Delivering radiation to these areas requires precise positioning to make sure the treatment area is in the same position each day. Due to the movement in these sites, it can sometimes be difficult to reproduce the required position each day.
