Coronavirus – Covid-19 Update for Radiation Therapy Patients

Coronavirus - COVID-19

AlignRT can help reduce your potential exposure to the corona virus while helping to deliver your radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy. AlignRT® is 100% contact-less technology. It does not require a breath monitoring apparatus, tattoos or marks or goggles or belts, all which require contact with external devices, potentially increasing the risk of contact exposure. Coronavirus – COVID 19

Cancer patients are among those at high risk of serious illness from a coronavirus infection because their immune systems are often weakened or compromised by cancer and its treatments. People who were treated for cancer in the past (especially if it was years ago) are likely to have normal immune function, but each person is different.

The CDC is now recommending that health care facilities and doctors prioritize urgent and emergency visits and procedures for the coming several weeks. In those circumstances, it won’t be life as usual. It will require patience on everyone’s part as we go through this pandemic.

It’s important that all cancer patients and survivors, whether currently in treatment or not, talk with a doctor who understands their situation and medical history to determine the best course of action.

Treatment

If it is decided by you and your cancer team that you will continue or start your radiation therapy, it is important to know that many cancer radiation centers are taking a number of precautions to treat you safely and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Some of the preventative measures are:

  • Screening patients for the virus prior to and during treatment
  • Practicing strict disinfecting procedures
  • Implementing strict staff protective gear requirements
  • Practicing social distancing with staff and patients
  • Using a technology that can minimize contact, like AlignRT®
